Player Profile - Louie the Longhorn

Louie the Longhorn made his first crosse when he was a mere bull calf out of a tree limb and used grape vines for lashing. He used a rounded rock he found in the pasture as the ball. He worked on his dodging with other young calves in the pasture. Soon he began beefing up, worked on fundamentals and his stick skills improved. Lacrosse was a game he thought all steers should play at Parkway West Pasture. He could play any position but quickly realized that playing defense and protecting his goal/his house was his passion. He didn't like the other team in his box. In 1995, during his senior year, his dream came true. Parkway West established a varsity lacrosse team, and Louie led the team in ground balls and many wins. He was named to the first team ALL-STATE squad in 1995. He went on to play Club ball at University of Texas for four years and was named ALL-AMERICAN in 1998 and 1999.

Louie still hangs with the West team - he helps with practices and attends games when he's in town. Even when absent, his presence is felt. Always a West Longhorn at heart.

Who is
who is The Parkway West Boys Lacrosse Club, also known as West Lacrosse, is an organization dedicated to providing high school boys the opportunity to play lacrosse competitively. The team participates in the Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association (MSLA) as a Boys Division I team in the Patriot League. High school boys lacrosse follows the National Federation of State High School Associations (known as the Federation) rules. Lacrosse is a club sport. The Club may use the name of the school but it does not get any financial support nor does it use any Parkway High School fields on a regular basis. It operates on fees and donations and the volunteerism of the parents, guardians, and fans of the Club. To see how you can help, review the list of volunteer positions in the volunteer form found on the Resources page.The Club is open to boys playing lacrosse in grades 9-12 at Parkway West High School in Ballwin, Missouri. The ideal roster is 75. At this time, there are no tryouts, however registration and receipt of dues is required.Your son must reside in the Parkway School District and attend Parkway West High School. The ideal roster is 75 boys for all teams combined. If your son lives in the district, and attends a school that does not offer a lacrosse program, he must participate in a Division II level team. Please contact the Head Coach for more information on eligibility.

the coachesVarsity Head Coach: Pete StirlingPete is in his 8th year as a PWBLC coach and 5th year as varsity head coach. He is a 1999 Parkway West graduate and currently employed by Verizon as a Consumer Financial Services Analyst. He played 2 years of varsity lacrosse at PWH and was a senior captain. Pete attended Mizzou where he played lacrosse for 4 years and graduated in 2003 with a major in business administration and finance. Coaching Philosophy: "Our goal as a coaching staff is to maintain consistency in the coaching staff at all levels so that the players are learning the same general system throughout their PWH careers. Our focus is on building fundamentals and we will put a new emphasis on defense. We will also focus on everyone working hard in practice so we can be a more tough-nosed team while increasing our speed and stamina."JV Coach: John McCoolJohn is in his 5th year as a PWBLC coach at Parkway West. He is familiar with the program having graduated from Parkway West High School where he played 4 years of lacrosse. He then attended Mizzou, being named to the Dean's List 2000-2002 as well as playing lacrosse for 4 years and serving as President of the Mizzou Lacrosse Club. Tom served as Mizzou Co-captain in 2003, was voted 2nd team All Conference in 2002 and has worked as a camp counselor at various Mizzou lacrosse camps.Coaching goal: "...to teach the young aspiring athletes the basics of playing lacrosse. I am less interested in winning than I am in making sure each player learns the fundamentals."Coach: Matthew SchallerMatt returns for his 3rd year with the PWBLC program this year. He played lacrosse at DeSmet Jesuit High, class of 2003. Matt was on the starting Mizzou lacrosse team, class of 2007, where he played a leadership role. They went to the national championship his first year and was 2nd team All-Conference '04-'06. His team made 1st team All-Conference in '07 and Matt was runner-up for the conference defensive player of the year. As the captain of the team '05-'07, Matt received Academic All-America honors twice and was also treasurer of the team for two years. Coaching Philosophy: "I demand a lot from my players, but at the same time, command a lot of respect. If my players give it their all and leave everything on the field then, win or lose, I consider it a success. My high school coach, Mike Sennett, told me, 'Never mistake activity for achievement.' This quote sums up a great lacrosse player; someone that shows up and works hard every single day, but makes sure that the work they are putting in is making them a better lacrosse player, not simply getting them through the practice."Coach: Joe TriggJoe returns for his 3rd year with the Parkway West program. Joe is a 2005 Parkway West graduate and is currently employed by the Special School District as an ABA Therapist. Joe played three years at Parkway West (2001-2003) and one year at Mizzou where he graduated in 2010 with a Bachelors in History. Joe previously coached JV at Columbia Hickman for 2 years and has coached with the Kings youth team since May 2010.Coaching Philosophy: When introducing new players to the sport and the program I think it is important to set them up to succeed. A player who has fundamentally sound skills can be more confident on the field and effect the confidence of his teammates in practice and games.

the board The Club is operated by volunteer parents and legal guardians of the players. Decisions and management of the Club are made by the Board, a group of officers and directors. Funding for the Club is based on fees and donations.

FAQs frequently asked questionsupdated on 10/20/2011Are there tryouts?The Club is open to boys playing lacrosse in grades 9-12. The ideal roster is 75. At this time, there are no tryouts, however registration and receipt of dues is required.How are teams defined?West Lacrosse supports three teams or squads: Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity. Varsity is defined by a 15-man roster plus additional players from any level, as deemed appropriate by the Head Coach. Boys on the 15-man roster may not play for other West Lacrosse teams. The Freshmen team is defined by freshmen and upper classmen who are novice players and who have never previously played competitive lacrosse. The Junior Varsity squad includes second, third and fourth year players. Some Freshmen players may swing to JV, and JV players may swing to Varsity as invited by the Head Coach on a game by game basis. Does my son have to attend Parkway West High School? Your son must reside in the Parkway School District and attend Parkway West High School. The ideal roster is 75 boys for all teams combined. If your son lives in the district, and attends a school that does not offer a lacrosse program, he must participate in a Division II level team. Please contact the Head Coach for more information on eligibility.When can I register my son to play?Registration begins in November and ends in February before the season begins. Full payment of Club fees and US LAX membership dues are required by no later than February 15, 2012.Players will not be able to begin official practices unless all fees are paid in full and applicable registration forms are received. Registration forms are available at the parent/player meetings in November and February as well as online.What about equipment and uniforms?Players supply their own equipment including stick, helmet, mouth guard (required to participate), pads, and shoes. A protective cup is also considered mandatory. Game/uniform jerseys are rented from the Club. Players purchase their own uniform/game shorts from The Club, and a practice jersey is also available for purchase. Pennies should be reversible with a dark and light side. How much does it cost to participate? 2012 costs for participating in the Parkway West Boys Lacrosse Club are summarized below: $400 club fee per player (if more than one son in your household is playing, a $50 discount per additional family-member player is offered at the upperclassmen level only.) $250 club fee per Freshman player. $35 US Lacrosse membership dues. $35 is waived with physical proof of US Lacrosse Insurance through 5/31/2012. Show current number and expiration date in written form. $100 uniform jerseys deposit. Deposit is returned at the end of the season if the uniform is returned on time and in acceptable condition. $35/pair uniform shorts. Uniform shorts are mandatory and are purchased from the Club; however they remain the property of the player. No returns/no refunds. Exchanges within a one week period are possible. $20 reversible practice jersey. Purchased from the Club and owned by the player, this jersey may be used multiple years.Additional costs:Transportation costs for games more than 100 miles from Parkway West Middle School will be determined and collected during the season when appropriate. These fees may include bus/coach rental, meals and lodging depending on schedule. Additional spirit wear is available and varies in price.What is the refund policy? If full payment of fees and dues was made, and the player resigns from the club before the first practice, the membership fees will be refunded in full. The uniform deposit is returned upon receipt of the jerseys in acceptable condition. We cannot refund the US Lacrosse membership dues. If a player resigns after the first practice, but before Spring Break, the refund is $100. After Spring Break, there will be no refunds. For uniform deposits, 100% refund is made if a player resigns or suffers a season-ending injury before the first game is played, assuming the uniform is returned and is of acceptable condition.How are fees distributed? Registration fees go toward salaries for coaches, officials for home games, an EMT trainer for Junior Varsity and Varsity games, field upkeep, tournament fees, insurance, MSLA dues, team balls, team equipment, etc.When is the season?Boys lacrosse is a Spring sport. The season begins with the first day of practice on Monday, February 27, 2012 and extends through late May with playoffs. The season culminates in an Alumni Game and Banquet.When does practice start and where are they held?The first day of practice for the 2012 season is Monday, February 27, 2012. Practice begins at 4:00pm. The teams practice at Parkway West Middle School every day after school unless otherwise indicated. Check the newsfeed.I dont drive yet, how do I get to practice?You have several options: You may take your gear to school and request that you leave it in a teachers room for pick up after school; you can easily walk to the practice fields; you can form a friendship with an older player and leave your gear in a vehicle and catch a ride with that player. Lots of boys are headed to the Middle School practice fields after school. ALWAYS check with your parent/legal guardian to ensure that your plans are acceptable.What if I miss a practice? You need to let your coach know about missing a practice. Practices are very important and are considered mandatory. From time to time other events and activities designed to foster teamwork will require player participation. Let your coach know as soon as possible of your absence. Coaches may be called, emailed or texted to relay information.How will I know if practice/game is still on?Practices and games are cancelled sometimes due to inclement weather. Check the website and/or follow Twitter (pwestlax) for the latest updates. Just because it is raining, dont assume that practice or a game is cancelled. Some practices will be held indoors at the Middle School. Some games are played in the rain as long as there is no lightning in the area. Play outside may resume in the absence of lightning for 20 minutes. When do the league games start? League play begins in mid March. Teams may participate in jamborees or tournaments before league play begins. Freshman games may begin in April. Games are typically held on weekdays. However, there will be several weekend games scheduled, if possible, so that parents or friends who otherwise might have difficulty seeing games will be able to attend.Where are league games played? Home games are played at Parkway West Middle School on Baxter Road. Away game locations are dependent upon the opponent and the facility that they use for games. Check the locations tab for directions to various fields. Confirmation of away venues will be confirmed on game day. Is transportation provided to away games?No transportation is provided by the school or the Club to regular away games. Players should arrange transportation to away games either with another family or another player. Plan ample time for travel to away games. Factor in traffic conditions and distance. The game may be forfeited if the team cannot supply the necessary roster. Transportation will be arranged by the Club for players and coaches for games farther away than 75 miles, and funded by parents/legal guardians. Will there be out-of-town travel?Occasionally the team will play games in western Missouri. Additional out of town trips may be scheduled. These games are typically Varsity and/or JV level games. Players and coaches travel together as a team. Parents must provide arrangements for their own transportation. Should lodging be necessary, the Club attempts to identify lodging options for out-of-town games and arrange for a block of rooms if possible. Parents/legal guardians and players are responsible for food and lodging expense.How do I learn more?An informational meeting is planned each November. www.mo22lax.comMissouri 22 Lacrosse (MO22) is a premier lacrosse team comprising of the top 22 boys lacrosse players from the state of Missouri. Our philosophy at MO22 is to provide the players with an all-encompassing experience from skills improvement, competitive play to college recruitment. We have to come together as a state-wide community to prove to the rest of the country that Missouri boys can play lacrosse, and more importantly, win. With MO22, we feel we have the appropriate strategy to do just that.To be recognized nationally we must first bring the lacrosse nation to Missouri. To help kick off our program, on the weekend of December 10-11, 2011 MO 22 is bringing in coaches from the Duke, Yale, Rutgers, Marquette, Ohio Wesleyan, Fairfield and Lindenwood Universities to run a lacrosse clinic. The clinic will consist of a variety of sessions focusing on skills work, fundamental instruction on all aspects of the game, and what players need to be doing in order to play lacrosse at the next level. MO22 will also be conducting tryouts for those attending the clinic to find the best 22 players to represent the State of Missouri in highly competitive tournament play around the country (practices and tournaments are in June and July). The team will consist of 30 players, with the top 22 traveling to the tournaments. This invitation is open to all boy lacrosse players, currently in grades 9 -11, who attend a high school in the state of Missouri. Registration fee to attend clinic & tryouts is $25/player (prior to November 21, 2011).The NCAA coaches will also conduct a youth clinic on Sunday, for boys currently in Grades 3 8, instructing our players of tomorrow on stick skills, lacrosse terminology and play making. This clinic will be open to the first 125 registrants. Registration fee for Youth clinic is $25/player (prior to November 21, 2011). Additionally the NCAA coaches will be conducting an informational session for parents to learn more about the college recruiting process and how players should prepare if they aspire to take their game to the collegiate level. As a non profit operation supported by corporate and individual contributions, MO22 offers players the opportunity to play on a highly competitive select lacrosse team for a low cost. If selected, players will be required to pay only a $100.00 registration fee. MO22 will cover the cost of all shorts, jerseys, sponsored travel, hotels, and tournament fees. This is a fantastic opportunity for your player to compete at the highest level, improve his lacrosse game and learn about playing lacrosse at a collegiate level.
